About Our Therapist

Stephanie Abaunza

Stephanie is practicing as a Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist serving children in the Nocatee and surrounding areas. She has been working with toddler and preschool children for over 11 years in a variety of different settings including hospital outpatient rehab, private schools and home health. Stephanie also holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence as a Speech-Language Pathologist with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and state licensure with Florida.

Educated at Florida State University for her undergraduate degree and at the University of Central Florida for her Master’s degree, Stephanie started her career as a Bilingual Speech Language Pathologist at All Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center in St. Petersburg, FL. Stephanie has serviced the Tampa Bay Area, Miami, FL (her hometown), and is now looking forward to treating the children of Nocatee and its surrounding areas. When Stephanie is not working, she enjoys reading, spending time by the water, and traveling with her husband and three children Emily, Lucas, and Mia.

Sunshine Speech Services

Stephanie created Sunshine Speech Pathology to continue helping children diagnosed with developmental delays, Autism Spectrum Disorders and speech disorders. She understands that the best way to support children and their families is to help facilitate not just “talking” but communication in their natural environment with the collaboration of family members, caregivers, and teachers. Stephanie believes providing therapy at home or in the school/daycare offers the best possible carry-over into the child’s everyday life.

Evaluations

Sunshine Speech provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, consultations, parent coaching, and treatment of individuals with speech, language and social communication disorders.

We provide 1-3 hour long comprehensive evaluations that formally and informally assess all areas of communication including speech articulation, fluency, receptive, expressive and pragmatic language.

The evaluation also includes a plan of care, long-term and short term objectives, referrals and recommendations.

Therapy

Based on evaluation results, a uniquely designed treatment plan is developed to address specific speech and language difficulties. Individual therapy sessions range from 30 to 60 minutes depending on age and severity of the child. If the child is bilingual (English/Spanish), therapy will be provided in the dominant language.

We highly encourage parents to observe treatment sessions in order to generalize results into the home environment. For children receiving treatment in schools or daycares, your therapist will be in communication with you providing activities and progress throughout.

School Screenings

Free service available to schools. A screening is a brief, 15 to 20-minute session completed by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist in order to determine if there are any areas of concern that warrant a comprehensive Speech-Language evaluation. Screenings will include a portion of a lengthy standardized assessment along with observations 1:1 and in the classroom through conversation and play.

Amazing!! Stephanie has a natural gift working with kids. Under her guidance, my daughter’s vocabulary exploded!! My daughter looked forward to each session and loved playing with her. I would recommend Sunshine Speech Pathology to any parent looking to advance their children’s language skills. You will be amazed at how much it makes a difference! It was an absolute pleasure working with Stephanie and her company. She did home visits for our sessions and was always professional and on time. We will miss her so!

Beatriz Newborn

Stephanie is a very kind, patient and thorough speech therapist. She is talented at working with the little ones and getting them to play while learning/speaking. Stephanie was a big blessing for us as we worked with our 3/4 year old who was hardly speaking. Now he is a chatter box and it’s very much due to her hard work and consistency. We would strongly recommend Stephanie to other families!

Stephanie from Sunshine Speech was exactly the therapist I had been searching for to treat my students! As a longtime PreK instructor, I had been seeing more and more students in need of intervention and I was met with inconsistent and unprofessional therapists for an entire year. When I found Sunshine Speech, I was very critical and interviewed Stephanie over the phone, giving her background on different students and trying to see if she truly understood what they needed. I was met with COMPLETE knowledge, compassion, and expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Speech therapy is provided by a speech-language pathologist and primarily focuses on improving communication through language and pronunciation. Speech therapy also includes fluency, feeding & swallowing, oral motor, voice, social communication, literacy, and cognition.

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) is a licensed professional who specializes in the assessment and treatment of communication disorders. SLPs work with people of all ages, from infants to adults. Speech-language pathologists are often referred to as speech therapists.

SLPs treat 9 different areas:

  • Articulation
  • Language
  • Fluency
  • Social communication
  • Voice and Resonance
  • Hearing
  • Feeding and Swallowing
  • Cognition
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

If you are unsure whether your child needs speech therapy services, the best thing to do is to speak with an SLP and determine next steps which may include an evaluation. Recommendations for speech therapy would be determined at the time of the evaluation.

The goal of speech therapy is to help your child improve their communication skills. Goals would include improving your child’s clarity of speech or increasing expressive language.

Each speech therapy session is different, as it is tailored to meet the specific needs of the child. In general, sessions will target goals, created by your child’s SLP based on the results of the evaluation. The SLP will use toys, games, books/stories and/or sensory experiences throughout the session.

Therapy can be provided in the home, private school, or daycare. The location depends on the family’s needs.

This is hard for us to know and varies by child. There are several factors that affect how long a child will be in therapy including the type of disorder, the severity, medical diagnoses, consistency in therapy, caregiver involvement and generalization of skills into their natural environment. Your therapist will recommend the therapy frequency and duration for a six-month period and will monitor your child’s progress on a weekly basis. Your child will be discharged from therapy if your child meets their goals prior to the re-evaluation. Otherwise, therapy will continue until goals have been met.

Presently, we are only working with children.

We currently do not accept insurance and are private pay only. When requested, we can provide families with a superbill to submit to their insurance provider for reimbursement.

Please note: The provision of a superbill does not guarantee reimbursement. Please check with your insurance provider prior to scheduling your sessions for applicability. We can provide you with the necessary paperwork but families are fully responsible to submit and communicate with the insurance company.

We also accept the Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA; formerly known as the Gardiner Scholarship). For more information on whether your family is eligible for this program, please visit www.stepupforstudents.org. Please note, your child DOES NOT have to have a medical diagnosis in order to receive funds.
